About .org
.org launched in 1985 as one of the original six TLDs, intended for organizations that did not fit the commercial (.com), educational (.edu), military (.mil), or governmental (.gov) categories. It was operated by Verisign until 2003, when ICANN transferred it to the Public Interest Registry, a nonprofit subsidiary of the Internet Society.
Although .org has no formal restriction to nonprofits, the association is strong and widely understood by the public. Charities, advocacy groups, open-source projects, and foundations dominate the registration mix.
An attempted 2019 sale of PIR to a private-equity firm was withdrawn after a coordinated pushback from the nonprofit community and ICANN's intervention. PIR remains independent and operates the registry as a public-interest function.
