About .com

.com is the original generic top-level domain and remains the default registration choice for most businesses, products, and projects on the public internet. Verisign has operated the .com registry since 2000 under contract with ICANN. The wholesale price is set by that registry agreement and rises on a controlled schedule.

It launched alongside .net, .org, .gov, .mil, and .edu in January 1985. The first .com ever registered was symbolics.com in March 1985. Roughly 160 million .com domains are active today, far ahead of every other TLD by volume.

The .com remains the safest brand-recognition choice and the hardest to find unregistered. Variants in newer or country-code TLDs are common fallbacks when the .com is taken or has been parked as an aftermarket asset.
