About .au

.au is the country-code TLD for Australia, regulated by .au Domain Administration (auDA), a non-profit policy body. The TLD was historically registered only at the third level (example.com.au, example.org.au, example.net.au), with strict eligibility based on registrant type and Australian presence.

In March 2022 auDA opened direct second-level .au registrations (example.au alongside example.com.au), with a six-month priority window for existing holders of the matching com.au or net.au. The priority window closed in September 2022, and direct .au is now fully open subject to the same Australian presence requirements as the third-level forms.

Australian Presence is required for registration: registrants must be Australian citizens, residents, organizations, or holders of an Australian-registered trade mark with a matching domain. The TLD is the dominant choice for Australian-facing brands and government, with .com.au and the direct .au form coexisting through the transition period.

Notable quirks

Australian Presence required for registration. Second-level .au (example.au) opened in 2022 alongside the legacy third-level structure (example.com.au).
