About .dev
.dev is operated by Google's registry arm, Charleston Road Registry, and was opened to general registration in February 2019. It was launched as part of Google's portfolio of developer-oriented TLDs alongside .app, .page, and several others.
The defining feature of .dev: every domain is on the HSTS preload list. Modern browsers refuse to load a .dev site over plain HTTP and will not let users click through a certificate warning the way they might for other TLDs. A valid TLS certificate is mandatory; serving HTTPS is not optional.
This makes .dev the obvious choice for developer tools, internal team sites, documentation hosts, and personal portfolios where the HTTPS-by-default guarantee is a feature rather than a constraint. The branding also benefits: a .dev domain reads as developer-facing on sight.
Notable quirks
HSTS-preloaded: browsers refuse HTTP for every .dev domain. A valid TLS certificate is required before the site is reachable in mainstream browsers.
